Wind power generation and photovoltaic power generation fluctuate in power output in relation to wind and weather conditions. Thus, it is concerning whether or not such fluctuations may result in a difference in power quality, such as frequency.

The vanadium redox flow battery charges and discharges electricity as the electrolytes that use vanadium and other ions circulate. It consists of cell stacks for input and output, tanks for electrolyte storage, and pumps for electrolyte circulation.

As the vanadium redox flow battery can have great output and capacity, it can be used for various purposes regarding power supply, such as frequency fluctuation suppression and surplus power supply control.

Major Strengths of a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

1. Separation of the power and energy components; the output and storage capacity can be scaled independently

2.       Longevity: An unlimited number of charging and discharging cycles, as electrodes and electrolytes have a long life span and do not deteriorate with each additional cycle

3.       Convenient thermal management with the capability of accurately monitoring and controlling of the amount of stored electric power

4.       Quick response times: A reaction time of less than 100 milliseconds, and no need for “equalization” charging (the overcharging of a battery to ensure all cells have an equal charge)

5.       Easy to maintain and extremely safe

6.       No harmful emissions, with low maintenance and high tolerance for overcharge/overdischarge
